# Updating the app and engine (/docs/troubleshooting/updating)

There are three things that update independently in SimpliGen: the app, the local engine, and your preset packs.

## The app [#the-app]

New SimpliGen versions bring features and fixes. Install the latest version when prompted or when a new release is announced. Some preset improvements require a minimum app version, and SimpliGen will tell you when an update needs a newer app.

## The local engine [#the-local-engine]

The local engine (the portable Python and ComfyUI that powers on-device generation) is managed for you.

* If a generation fails due to a broken or missing dependency, click the **Local Engine** item on the rail's bottom system strip, choose **"Manage engine"**, and use **"Reinstall Dependencies"** on the affected pack.
* For a deeper reset, open **"Manage engine"** the same way and use **"Reinstall Engine"**.

You only need the engine for local generation. Cloud generation does not use it.

## Preset packs [#preset-packs]

Preset packs update separately from the app, through the [Preset Store](/docs/models-loras/preset-store).

* When packs are out of date, SimpliGen flags them.
* Use **Update all** to bring every pack current in one click.
* Updating packs is what makes new and fixed presets appear, and what enables new cloud options.

## A good habit [#a-good-habit]

If something looks off with a specific preset, update its pack first. If something looks off with the whole app, update the app. If local generation breaks, repair the engine or its dependencies.
